Use a sanding sponge block to sand*lightly* the entire table. There is no need to sand the table finish, just lightly sand just enough to roughen the existing finish and give the Polyshades some grip. There's no need to sweat an iota for this step. In my opinion, I would use this application on the table because those damn tables were done exceptionally well in the 70s.
